What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is also called NDIS. It is a scheme designed to help people with a disability under the age of 65 to get the support they need. The NDIS is designed for people with a permanent and significant disability which impacts the ability to engage in day to day activities.

If you meet the NDIS eligibility and work out what reasonable and necessary supports you need to live the life you want, NDIS will fund to pay for the supports you need.

What supports will the NDIS fund?

The NDIS funds a range of services such as Accommodation, Flexible Support, Allied Health and Community Access – you choose when where and how to receive these supports.

Eligibility for the NDIS depends on a few things

  • Residency – You need to Australian citizen, permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen who holds a Special Category Visa
  • Age – You must be under 65 years of age during the time of your application
  • Disability – You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects your day to day living
  • Location – You need to be in an area where the scheme is already rolled out
  • Early intervention – You may be eligible if early intervention would improve your child’s functioning.

Can I start planning before my meeting with the NDIS?

Yes definitely, we encourage you to do that. Essence Care Australia can also assist you to pre-plan. We can support you understand the NDIS, talk to you about your eligibility, identify goals and apply.

Who will manage the funds in my plan?

Your funding and payment structure will depend on your plan management type. There are three forms of NDIS plan management:

  • Agency Managed – The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) manages your plan for you. This means that the NDIA is responsible for directly paying providers for any services you book with them.
  • Self Managed – You are responsible for all payments. You are in control and have full flexibility over your service bookings. If you are confident in coordinating your finances independently, this is a great option for you.
  • Plan Managed – A third-party individual manages your plan on your behalf. This person is known as your plan manager and you must pay a fee for their services. In some cases, you may receive funding in your plan specifically for plan management fees.

Can I have my family during the planning process and the NDIS meeting?

Yes, you can invite family member during this process and every step of the way.

What if I am not happy with my service provider, can I change?

Yes, you can. If you are not satisfied with the services you are receiving, you can change to ensure you are receiving the services you want.
